Triphala: Three Herb Wonder

I first became acquainted with Triphala when I was doing volunteer work in an ashram. The resident

yogi monk  would prescribe it to me for everything! Whether my digestion is feeling sluggish or I am feeling a little stressed, Triphala seem to be the wonder medicine that can cure everything.

True enough in India, Triphala is widely used as a supplement by adults and children alike. It is referred to as the Mother medicne for  it nurtures the body like a mother would her children.

This Indian formulation which means ‘Three Fruits’ is famous for cleansing and detoxifying the body. In Ayurveda, proper digestion is of utmost importance! Proper elimination is essential to rid of the body accumulated toxins and waste which can cause disease and hinder the body from absorbing nutrients.

Triphala  comprises of three herbs: Amla, Harada and Bihara.  Amla has 20 times more vitamin C than orange which helps the immune system and fight anti-radicals. It is a good anti oxidant and have the added anti-aging benefit.

The second herb Harada has high fiber which makes it a great laxative and can also calm the nerves and help with anxiety.  Bihara is known for purifying the blood and liver and removing excess mucus.

Because of its high nutritional value and ability to cleanse and detoxify up to the deepest tissues, Triphala is one of the most valuable herbal formulations in the world.  And unlike other natural laxatives which can deplete the body’s reserve of mineral and Vitamin Bs, Triphala is unique because it does not deplete the body of its nutritional reserves.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF TRIPHALA:

  • a gentle digestive tonic that can promote regular elimination
  • can lower cholesterol
  • can promote weight loss
  • can lower blood pressure
  • anti-oxidant
  • a good source of Vitamin C

HOW TO TAKE TRIPHALA

I have taken both the tablet and powder form of Triphala but most herbalist would suggest decocting the power into tea is the best way to take it. This way the effect of the herb starts orally signalling the rest of the body what to expect.

I have to admit taking the tablet form is easier as it is not the best tasting herbal tea, but I am finding the astringent and bitter taste gradually easing over time. Also our  palate is so used to eating sweet and salty food, the different taste spectrum that triphala gives balances our taste buds and also our system.
