GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone your gut releases naturally after eating. It slows digestion, supports healthy insulin release, and signals fullness to your brain, which is why medications that mimic GLP-1 (like Ozempic and Wegovy) have become popular for blood sugar and weight management. But you don’t need medication to support your body’s own GLP-1 response: eating meals with fibre, protein, and healthy fats, and eating vegetables or protein before carbohydrates, are all shown to naturally stimulate GLP-1 release.
Some plant compounds are also being studied for a potential role here. Apple cider vinegar has been researched for its acetic acid content, which may slow gastric emptying and help moderate the blood sugar spike after a meal. It is a similar downstream effect to what GLP-1 itself helps regulate. Mulberry leaf, one of the herbs in our Herbal Cider Elixir, has been researched for slowing carbohydrate absorption in the upper intestine and potentially helping protect GLP-1 from breaking down too quickly, while moringa is being studied in early research for its effect on GLP-1 secretion and glucose tolerance. Alongside these, everyday habits, fibre-rich meals, adequate protein, and mindful meal order remain the most well-established ways to support your body’s natural GLP-1 response without side effects that may come with medication.
