What Is Amla and What Is It Good For?

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is a small sour fruit that’s been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, often referred to as “the great rejuvenator.” It’s one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C, and also contains polyphenols, tannins, and antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD). In Ayurveda, amla is considered “tridoshic,” meaning it’s traditionally believed to support balance across all three doshas (body energies) – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – making it one of the more universally used Ayurvedic herbs. It’s traditionally valued for supporting healthy ageing, digestion, immunity, and skin and hair health.
