Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is an evergreen shrub that grows in bogs in North America. It produces dark red fruits that contain salicylic acid. It is closely related to blueberries, bilberries and lingonberries  

Historically both leaves and fruit were used for different purposes. The common use of cranberries is to prevent urinary tract infection (UTI) the chemical makeup in cranberries keep bacteria from attaching itself to the cells in the urinary tract. Other uses of this miracle fruit are to combat kidney stones, enlarged prostate and the common cold.

The cranberry gets its name from Dutch and German settlers who called it the “crane berry” since the flowers on cranberry vines resemble the head of a crane.
