How Do Adaptogens in Modern-Day Support Work?

Adaptogens are a category of herbs studied for their ability to help the body maintain homeostasis, a stable internal balance, particularly under physical, mental, or environmental stress. Much of the research interest centres on the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), the body’s central stress-response system, which regulates the release of cortisol. Rather than simply suppressing cortisol, adaptogens are studied for their role in modulating the HPA axis response, helping it respond more efficiently to stress and return to baseline more effectively afterwards, rather than staying chronically activated or blunted.

Rhodiola has been studied for its influence on stress-related fatigue and HPA axis regulation, while Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) is one of the original herbs studied under the “adaptogen” classification developed by Soviet researchers in the mid-20th century, for its non-specific resistance to stress. Reishi and Schisandra are traditionally used to support the nervous system and Liver function, respectively, both of which interact closely with stress physiology, while Astragalus and Gynostemma are traditionally used to support broader resilience and vitality. Together, these herbs are traditionally combined to support the body’s adaptive stress response as a whole system, rather than targeting a single hormone or pathway in isolation.
