Honouring Ancient Traditions | Inspiring Transformation

At Shoku Iku, we are driven by a determination to provide herbal products that are truly transformative. Born out of frustration but sustained by passion, we have created a sanctuary that thrives on innovation, nurture, and foresight.

Our mission is to source, produce, and deliver the finest herbal products in the world. Our Apothecary is composed of organic, wildcrafted, and ethically grown botanicals, carefully selected to offer pristine, unadulterated, and wholesome medicines for the wellness of mind, body, and soul.

Rooted in the ancient traditions, our products honour the principles of harmony and ancient formulation, supported by years of anecdotal and traditional evidence. At the same time, we embrace modern sensibilities, ensuring our offerings are both vibrant and medicinally potent.

Sustainability is deeply woven into our ethos, and we strive to minimise our footprint in every aspect of our business. We take what we do very seriously, never compromising on quality, care, or respect.

Wellbeing, kindness, and innovation are at the heart of everything we do. At Shoku Iku, we are proud to craft remedies that inspire transformation and nurture the connection between nature and humanity.

Di Tao Philosophy

Di Tao (地道), a cornerstone of Daoist practice, embodies the philosophy of sourcing herbs from their spiritual homeland—their most authentic and natural environment. This concept ensures that herbs are physically robust and spiritually vibrant, offering their full potency and efficacy. The term “Di Tao” translates to the “way of the Earth,” reflecting the profound connection between the herb and its native environment.
Herbs grown in their Di Tao regions are influenced by the unique characteristics of their homeland, such as the water that nurtures them, the soil they grow in, the specific genetic variety of the plant, the weather, and even the insects and microorganisms that live symbiotically with them. These factors and how the herbs are collected, prepared, and processed all contribute to their final efficacy—something that cannot be imitated or replicated. The differences between herbs grown in their spiritual homeland and those grown in sub-optimal locations can be staggering. While plants can grow outside their Di Tao regions, they often lack the potency, strength, and effectiveness of herbs cultivated in their true environment, making them weaker and less effective.
This is why sourcing herbs from their Di Tao regions is non-negotiable. These herbs have been proven over centuries of human experience to be the most efficacious. They reflect the purity, strength, and authenticity required to support deep health intentions and cannot be matched by herbs grown in non-Di Tao locations.
At Shoku Iku, we honour ancient wisdom by committing to sourcing only the finest herbs from their spiritual homelands. This philosophy is deeply rooted in the Taoist principles of harmony and balance, ensuring that our herbs are of the highest quality obtainable. This dedication goes far beyond the normal standards of the nutraceutical industry, ensuring that every herb in our apothecary reflects the purity, potency, and reverence that have defined Taoist herbalism for thousands of years.

Standardisation philosophy

At the heart of our approach is a deep respect for the medicinal value of the whole herb. Unlike standardised products that focus on isolated compounds, we believe in the intelligence of nature and the synergy of all the constituents within a plant. While modern science often highlights specific compounds in herbs, we recognise that these discoveries are just the beginning. Nature’s intricate design includes countless unidentified and likely potent compounds that work together in harmony, and we trust in this natural intelligence to deliver holistic benefits.

Standardisation typically involves chemically extracting a single “active” constituent based on the assumption that this one ingredient alone is responsible for the plant’s effects. However, this approach raises important questions: Does isolating one compound truly reflect the plant’s full power? And is this isolated ingredient more effective than the whole herb? In our view, the answer lies in the principle of constituent synergy—the idea that all the plant’s constituents work together to deliver its medicinal properties.

When it comes to the extraction method, we use traditional extraction methods to ensure that the full range of medicinal compounds and energetic qualities of the herb are preserved. This approach maintains the life force and subtle balance that herbalists have relied on for millennia. In contrast, standardisation often results in a narrow focus on single isolates, which can lead to side effects, reduced efficacy, or even a misunderstanding of the herb’s true potential. Whole plant extracts, on the other hand, retain the synergy that makes medicinal plants so effective, as their constituents work in harmony with the body’s enzymes, liver metabolism, and circulation.

The pharmaceutical model of isolating and standardising compounds often overlooks the complexity of a plant’s biochemical profile and interaction with the human body. The plant’s unique intelligence, secondary metabolites, and environmental adaptations are lost when parts are separated from the whole. This diminishes the holistic benefits that whole plant extracts provide. While every type of herbal extract has its place, we believe there is unparalleled power in preserving the holistic synergy of the whole plant.

At the core of our philosophy is the understanding that herbal medicine is not just about isolated chemicals but the harmony and synergy of all the plant’s constituents working together. By honouring the whole herb, we celebrate the whole person.

Our Passion for Organic and Sustainable foods

At Shoku Iku, we believe that food should do more than satisfy hunger—it should nourish your body, elevate your energy, and care for the planet. That’s why we’re committed to creating high vibrational living foods that truly align with a healthier, more conscious way of living. Food that is alive with nutrients, flavour, and intention has the power to transform how you feel, think, and connect with the world around you.
Our dedication to high vibrational foods means we focus on ingredients that are pure, wholesome, and free from anything that diminishes their vitality. This is why we say NO to oxidised oils, gluten, refined sugar, and refined flour.

Our meals are entirely plant-based, crafted to encourage people to embrace the incredible power of plants. We take it a step further by incorporating exceptional botanicals and superfoods to elevate both the nutritional value and the energetic vitality of every dish. Our intention is simple yet profound: to bring more plants and herbs onto people’s plates, nurturing their bodies and inspiring a deeper connection to the natural world.

We also embrace time-honoured culinary techniques like fermenting, dehydrating, and pickling to enhance the nutritional value and flavour of our creations. Activating our nuts and seeds is another step we take to unlock their full potential, making them easier to digest and more bioavailable for the body. These methods reflect our commitment to honouring both the creativity and tradition of food preparation.
Our passion extends beyond the kitchen. We are proud to support local farmers and small producers who share our values, sourcing Certified Organic, Australian-grown, and regeneratively-farmed produce. By working with those who care for the land, we ensure that every ingredient we use is not only good for you but also good for the planet.

We’re also very intentional about what we leave out. Every day, we say NO to preservatives, GMOs, refined sweeteners, refined carbs, hydrogenated fats, and anything that harms the environment. By saying NO to these, we free you to say YES to food that nourishes your body, mind, and soul.

At Shoku Iku, we’re not just making meals—we’re creating a movement. A movement toward sustainable, high-vibrational living that celebrates the power of good food to heal, inspire, and connect. When you eat our food, you’re not just eating better—you’re choosing a better way of living.

About Yoko

Hi I am Yoko Inoue, a master blender, macrobiotic and raw living food expert and enthusiast, chef and owner of Shoku Iku.
I started Shoku Iku through my passion of wanting to create a holistic haven.

I studied macrobiotic philosophy and culinary skills at the Japan’s famed Kushi institute. This allowed me to explore not only holistic nutrition but also raw and living foods and in turn Kampo medicine (Traditional Japanese Medicine) that I am currently studying.

I was born in a small town in Japan and immigrated to New Zealand at 15 and settled in Australia in my 20s. My life is no fairy tale but I am so grateful to every twist and turn as it has shaped me into the person I am today.

I grew up watching my grandfather who was a dietician in Japan. He always had the right approach to help others, ever ready with a kind word and smile. It was satisfying seeing him help people in every way he could.

After quite an illustrious career in the arts I wanted to explore something else, as I was not being challenged and fulfilled. Everything in my life brought me to this point in my life.

My first love in this journey was macrobiotic food, which opened avenues to tonic herbalism, and raw and living food. Macrobiotic food, herbs and raw and living food brought out the creative skills in my cooking.

The very idea of suspending the traditional notion of how food is prepared with certain ingredients and reimagining familiar taste profiles in an entire new way always excites and invigorates me. Cooking not only excites me but also frees up my intuition in every way.

I knew in my heart this is what I wanted to do help, educate and inform my community and take people on a journey to understand the wonders of macrobiotic food, choice herbs, tonics and supplements and how these can help bring them to a place of well being with heart, mind, body and soul.

Shoku Iku is a culmination of years of study, determination, trials and tribulations and we have just begun. I can’t wait to share all the wonderful and amazing things coming up.

Here’s to your health and well being
